Punchdrunk – The Drowned Man

Punchdrunk Poster

A Punchdrunk aficionado must… wander, explore, investigate, absorb, read, be subsumed, watch, follow, snoop. Construct your own narrative. There is a short, general outline of a story handed to you as you enter the sensorially deprived world of The Drowning Man, along with your mask which you are to wear at all times – and talk to no one. It tells of two couples – a man having an affair without his partner knowing, and woman doing the same to her partner and both ending with a death. And from there on you’re pretty much on your own… doing all of the above. Continue reading Punchdrunk – The Drowned Man

Sharp Art Photography

4th Plinth

I’m starting to build up a new Photography section and have started with cityscapes of London.

Had the most glorious, crisp evening walking down from Trafalgar Square down to Waterloo Bridge. The Forth Plinth was playing resident to a piece called ‘Powerless Structures Fig. 101’ by Elmgreen and Dragset. Cast in bronze it mirrors the more traditional statues but as its subject is a young boy playing on his rocking horse, the gallantry depicted here is of a potential one in the future, not of past conquests. The warm colour as the sun was setting and the sky’s violet made a fabulous contrast. Continue reading Sharp Art Photography

Know The Not Known

Curiosity Rewarded

I found this interesting short which is a combination of graffiti, advertising icons, interesting space and one poor Curiosity Rewardedbloke on a chair.
It is part of a campaign to create interest in Tiger Beer and involves a huge web of interactive incitements that will involve their target audience in engaging proactively within the campaign. It is a clever mix of treasure hunt and orienteering using all the digital paraphernalia we have available to us today and a wide range of creative fields. It harnesses digital, outdoor, magazines, media partnerships, PR, trade relations and events. And all turn their talents to directing the target audience to a FaceBook Hub page where their curiosity is rewarded with invites to underground, invite only, Tiger Beer events in pubs across London.

Has anyone been to any of these?

There are supposed to be special edition four pack out this year too for those who are not faint hearted:)

Pop Art Tutorial

photoshop

There are many Photoshop tutorials out there with help on creating different finishes and effects. This one whizzes through one way of creating a Pop Art image.

The video

I like the way he demonstrates very quickly with no messing around. You do have to watch his cursor closely to see precisely what he’s clicking on, because he doesn’t always tell you. But I have made quick notes to support this video which you can have to one side as well, whilst you chose your own image and work your way through the process. Give it a go – if you’ve got Photoshop that is.

Rugby as Pop Art

Pop Art by Aaron Tomlinson. Photo / Simon Baker

Pop Art by Aaron Tomlinson. Photo / Simon BakerKiwi artist Aaron Tomlinson struck upon the idea of popular rugby players – particularly Dan Carter and Richie McCraw – as icons that would benefit from a Pop Art overhaul. He talks candidly to the local New Zealand Herald about his thoughts and what was fun about this idea. There has to be fun in Pop Art doesn’t there!

I like that way he links popularist images and icons and moves the ideas on to what is important, today.

You can catch the video here.

Roy Lichtenstein at Museum Ludwig

Conversation by Roy Lichtenstein

Conversation by Roy LichtensteinRoy Lichtenstein – Kunst als Motiv (Art as Motive) is a collection of about a hundred pieces which reflect his interpretation of other great modern pieces with a Lichtenstein twist. He uses his flat palate of bold colours and outlines and his now famous cartoon shadings with benday dots and blobs to break up the images and create his own slant on masters such as Picasso, Monet, Matisse, Mondrian and Dalí.
This exhibition at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne runs from 2nd July until 3rd October 2010.

Banksy Prints Stolen

Banksy Museum piece

Banksy Museum pieceIf you’ve seen Banksy’s book, Wall and Piece, you will have witnessed several examples of Banksy’s art being surreptitiously placed on the walls of famous galleries and museums.

This example, ‘Early Man Goes To Market’  appeared in The British Museum in 2005 and was completely overlooked until Banksy pointed it out on his website. All credit to the Museum staff for recognising man’s need for making marks and it being seen by the largest possible audience. It is now in their permanent collection.

I’m sure this drew a wry smile from the artist himself.

I wonder if the recent reversal of fortunes of Banksy’s work from Art Republic did the same. Probably did. Two Banksy prints were stolen by a man and woman from the shop in central London. And this is not the first time this has happened with Art Republic. Apparently, 10 prints were stolen from  the same company, only in Brighton. Tut, tut, Art Republic – very clumsy.
